Origin and background of the transformation (Lore)

Super Saiyan 3 is the culmination of the intensive training Son Goku undertook in the Afterlife after sacrificing himself during the Cell Games. Revealed for the first time to everyone’s surprise during his battle against the fearsome Majin Buu on Earth, this form pushes Saiyan genetic potential to its absolute limits, unleashing spiritual power (Ki) of an intensity never before seen. It is characterised by a radical physical transformation in which the accumulated energy causes his golden hair to grow to enormous lengths and alters his facial features, giving him a primal, ferocious appearance. However, this physical supremacy comes with a major drawback: Super Saiyan 3 consumes such a phenomenal amount of energy that it very quickly depletes Goku’s time among the living and exhausts his body to the point of making the transformation unstable during prolonged battles, making this state a formidable double-edged sword.
